A Kitchen of a Different Color

“I wanted this jolt of color to emphasize that the kitchen is the joyful heart of the house,” says designer Christina Rottman. To achieve it, a blackened umber glaze was applied to the cabinets, then painted over with a turquoise glaze. Buffing, stippling, and scraping gave the cabinets a timeworn look. Countertops are limestone.

Barney recently cooked a pike that he had caught from the comfort of his own sofa. The rug is from The Rug Company, the pink sofa from The Conran Shop, cushions from Thomas Eyck (thomaseyck.com), coffee table from Habitat and bunting from Hen & Hammock (henandhammock.co.uk). “It’s not all idyllic – we have to keep the windows covered with screens in the spring due to the bugs,” Curran says.

Having recently published her first book, Organised Fun, Curran is an expert on entertaining. “We love playing after- dinner games when friends come over, and with all the street parties and DIY festivals going on, there is a real resurgence in home-spun fun for free right now,” she says. “My book is full of ideas for things to do at home, including a few nostalgic favourites like British bulldog and charades.” The rugs in the dining area are from Vanderhurd (vanderhurd.com) and the chairs are from Retrouvius (retrouvius.com).

“The house was an empty shell,” Curran says. “But we filled it with things we love.” The rug in the main bedroom is from Vanderhurd (vanderhurd.com), and the throw was picked up on a trip to India. The cushions and rug on the deck are from Morocco. “We do the supermarket shop in the speedboat each week,” Curran says. “I love being here so much, I don’t understand why more people don’t live on a river.”

This modern family apartment is located in Gothenburg, Sweden and it was recently renovated. What a happy family! I indeed admire them very much.

This design indeed make full use of house space, but do you dare to live in it? Even the rope is strong enough, we still can’t help worrying if we will fall off the hanging bed. What inspires the designer having such a creativity is long-time lack of living space.

Gary Chang, the designer of the compact house, lives in one of the world’s most densely populated cities, Hong Kong. After three decades in the same boxy, 32-square-meter(344 sq ft) dwelling he grew up in, he has come up with an innovative answer to the increasingly cramped lives of many urban dwellers.

“The idea is everything is moving. This is my laundry space,” Chang said, sliding away a wall filled with CDs to reveal a washing machine and dryer. By sliding another track-mounted metal wall that bears a plasma TV, a kitchen materialized. Beside that, there is a luxurious 1.9-meter bathtub that itself turns into a guest bed.

While people in other teeming cities such as Tokyo resort to drop-down beds and foldable futons, the award-winning Chang has taken the concept of space-saving to the extreme. His tiny rectangular apartment, tucked into the bowels of an old, nondescript tenement building, has polished chrome walls that bear 24 configurations, each suiting a specific need. The space available becomes a home theater, spa, kitchen, bedroom, chill-out zone rigged up with a hammock, depending on what Chang needs at any moment.

At a cost of HK$1.8 million ($231,700), Chang hopes his dwelling offers a viable, life-enhancing alternative for Hong Kongers who can’t afford anything bigger.

Before you decide to choose color for your bedroom, you need to know that it is not good to choose only one color because any pure color will cause irritation in human perception, especially those active palette, such as yellow, orange, and red.
